The more things change…

Self-Gratification April 13th, 2008

To be fair, I did hit the planning stage for some time… Although, admittedly, that time was mainly spent developing interesting concepts for the Deadlamb logo. I did spend about two minutes sketching out the layout for the blog redesign and realised I rather liked the one I had.

As I have already mentioned, the Deadlamb – The Blog layout was originally based on the PDwan theme which I chose because of the nicely-sized header and simple, two-column set-up, which I liked at the time because I thought it worked with the Deadlamb homepage better than most. Despite my complete lack of understanding (not about anything in specific, just a general lack of understanding), I managed to bodge the original theme to follow the style of the homepage. I was thoroughly impressed with myself at the time. And, having returned to the position of having to edit code, I’m even more impressed with myself for being able to do anything other than bang my head against the table.

Maybe this suggests that I’ve gotten stupider over the years – and I wouldn’t disagree, though I’d like to think that I’m getting back on the right track with the latest changes to The Blog.

Ok, so it looks pretty much the same. When considering the design, I quickly realised that I kinda liked the way it looked and I was only changing it for the sake of learning something. I’m definitely keeping a long-term ambition of refreshing the whole Deadlamb style, but that would start with the homepage and move on from there. At the moment, I’m just thoroughly chuffed with what I learnt last night and what I was able to achieve through a wing and a prayer.

It may not look like much, but I think I finally get it – which is two-thirds of the battle, I guess.

So, please, enjoy the larger layout, less-heavy front-page, homepage-style leftbar navigation, featured images, ALL articles at the bottom, tweaked colors for optimized ‘oh, didn’t notice that’-ness…which may not seem like a major overhaul, but fuck you.

Oh, all this talk about designing themes makes this ol’ post on Mashable particularly relevant:
