A design for strife
Just in case my last post (which ended with a desperate “where I do I start?” with regards to the blog redesign) inadvertently gave you the impression that I deserve even less credit than I actually do, allow me to clarify.
I know that I should really start with the design. Sit down with a pad and paper and bash out shit loads of concepts of what I want this thing to look like. Then I should refine my favourite until it’s perfect, work up a mock-copy on Photoshop or Illy, and tweak that until there’s no mistaking exactly how the end product will look.
I know that’s what I should do, but it’s not what I want to do. Here’s why:
I love designing awesome websites. I could do it for days, attacking it with a passion I normally reserve for chavvy-looking girls in booby tops. I’ll spend weeks perfecting it until suddenly I reach that point when I see utter clarity of purpose and I finally just get it.
The problem is that I don’t know where to go after there.
You see, I have two choices: design the site exactly how I want it and forget the fact that eventually I’ll have to make it, or restrain myself and compromise on a design that could be easily achievable – just so I know I could make it one day. Either one isn’t particularly attractive but, gun to my balls, I’ll pick the former option.
That being so, I’m now off to sharpen my pencils and dig out some copies of Creative Review for inspiration. I’ll try and keep you posted and publish updates on the design process. No promises though, I’ll probably be in a really bad mood. And you wouldn’t like me when I’m grumpy.
